Putting myself in a position to be successful via the token asian phenomenon

With Reading Week at an end, so too has my ability to sleep in every morning. I couldn’t make the transition, however, and wound up going to bed at 2 AM on Sunday night, which was a problem considering that I had a 8:30 AM class on Monday morning. Remember my problem with the inability of profs to differentiate me from other Asian guys for the purposes of participation? Well, I think I solved that problem in my first class of this quarter…by waltzing in 10 minutes late. Yeah, that’s not the type of differentiation I was going for.

By the middle of the second class, I was ready to pass out. The prof was asking us to think of what we, as students, needed to do to make the learning experience as effective as possible, and then asked us to write them down for ourselves.

My list literally read like this:

-Ask questions if unsure
-Sleep

I’ve also decided to switch seats to the other side of the room in my class. First, I’m doing it because some of my other friends sit in that area. But secondly, I noticed that where I sat previously, there was a huge cluster of Asian guys. As part of my strategy to make myself more noticeable, my new spot only has one Asian guy around me, and he tends to change spots a bit. If nothing else, I can say that I’m trying.

As you may know, I’m a baseball nut. Every year, I run a fantasy baseball league, and every year, I prepare for the draft with tons of research. I’ve nicknamed my research the CHAN - Championship Honest Analysis Node. (more…)
