Next time, I’m going by Chan

I went to get a haircut the other day. To make sure that I wouldn’t have to wait when I got there, I phoned the place to book an appointment.

-Hi, I’d like to book an appointment for a haircut. Are you going to have someone available at 5 or 5:30?
-5:30 is OK. Name?
-Simon.
-Who?
-Simon. S-I-M-O-N.
-Oh, Samuel. OK. See you at 5:30.

I thought that it was kind of weird that he screwed up my name, but chalked it up to the language barrier on his part since English wasn’t the guy’s first language. I get there at 5:35 (Chan Standard Time, remember), and I spoke to the guy behind the counter. (more…)

Being Chantastic and Asian is the same as just being Asian

For some classes here at Rotman, we’re graded on our participation in class discussion. Unfortunately, I don’t feel that that is an accurate reflection on either the insight I’ve offered in class, or the points that I’ve made. My belief seems to be supported by the marks I’ve been receiving.

Let’s take my Strategy marks from last quarter:

Case competition: A
Final Exam: A-
Participation: B

Let’s now take a look at my Marketing marks from last quarter:

Case Assignment #1: A-
Case Assignment #2: A-
Final Exam: A-
Participation: B

The participation marks seem a little out of line with everything else, right? (more…)
